What to Expect
What to Expect When Meeting with the Ombuds
Reaching out to the Wake Forest University Ombuds Office can be a helpful step in navigating workplace concerns. Whether you’re facing a conflict, seeking guidance, or simply need a confidential space to talk things through, the Ombuds is here to help.
Here’s what you can expect when you schedule a meeting:
Step 1: Scheduling Your Meeting
- Contact the Ombuds Office by email or phone to set up a time that works for you.
- Meetings can be held in person, via phone, or over video call, based on your preference.
- You do not need to provide details about your concern in advance—just let us know you’d like to talk.
✅ Confidentiality begins the moment you reach out.
Step 2: The Conversation
During your meeting, the Ombuds will:
- Listen to your concerns with respect and without judgment
- Ask clarifying questions to help you identify key issues
- Help you explore options for addressing the situation
- Discuss possible next steps if you choose to take action
- Provide guidance on available university resources
You are in control of the process. The Ombuds does not force any action, and you are never required to follow a specific course of action.
Step 3: Exploring Your Options
Depending on your situation, the Ombuds may:
- Help you think through a conversation you need to have
- Suggest conflict resolution strategies
- Provide referrals to relevant university offices or resources
- Facilitate an informal discussion (if appropriate and agreed upon by all parties)
- Identify broader patterns or concerns that may need systemic attention (while maintaining confidentiality)
What Happens Next?
- You decide what, if anything, to do next. The Ombuds provides guidance, but the next steps are entirely up to you.
- If you choose to take action, the Ombuds can support you in preparing for conversations or decision-making.
- If no further action is needed, your conversation remains private and off-the-record.
There is no obligation to return or take further steps. Some people visit the Ombuds only once, while others return for follow-up discussions.
When to Contact the Ombuds
- As a first step to explore options
- As a last resort when other avenues seem closed
- Anywhere along the way when you need support, clarity, or a neutral perspective
If you’re unsure whether the Ombuds can help, we encourage you to reach out. Your visit is completely confidential and informal—a space to explore possibilities with no pressure or obligation.
